Statistics Collaboratory

Director, and Associate Professor of Statistics - Zhiwei Zhang

Daniel JeskeProfessor Zhang joined UCR in September, 2016, after 11 years of federal service at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health. He has collaborated with epidemiologists and other health researchers on many studies, including the Naturalistic Teenage Driving Study, which examined risky driving behaviors of newly licensed teenage drivers, and the Consortium on Safe Labor, a large observation study that described contemporary labor progression and birth outcomes in the United States. He has also conducted statistical research in several different areas, including causal inference, precision medicine, missing data, clinical trial design and analysis, pooling/group testing, and analysis of correlated data. His statistical research has produced more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed statistical journals. While at FDA, he won the Scientific Excellence Award on two occasions (as Outstanding Junior Investigator in 2009; for Excellence in Analytical Science in 2015).

He has a BS in Applied Chemistry (Beijing Medical University, 1994), an MS in Medicinal Chemistry (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, 1997), and a PhD in Biostatistics (University of Pittsburgh, 2003).

Faculty Affiliate, and Professor of Statistics   - Daniel Jeske

Karen Xu

Professor Jeske joined UCR in the Fall of 2003, coming from Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, where he was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff and a Technical Manager in the High Performance Communication Systems Lab.  During his 17-year career at Bell Laboratories, he worked in an internal consulting environment developing and applying statistical analysis methodologies to solve a diverse array of engineering problems.  Examples of recent problems include development and application of practical software reliability models, design of geolocation prediction algorithms for wireless networks, development of signal-to-noise ratio estimators for wireless networks, derivation of improved network clock offset estimation methods, and design of highly reliable shared mesh networks.

He was a Visiting Part-Time Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at Rutgers University for 10 years, teaching a variety of traditional graduate-level courses. He collaborated with the Rutgers Statistics department on a consulting project for the FAA that utilized text data analysis and classification methodologies to manage risk indicators.  After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Austin Peay State University in 1980, he received a Master of Science degree (1982) and a Ph.D. (1985) in Statistics from Iowa State University.
