Robert J. Beaver OSCAR Awards

OSCAR is an acronym for Outstanding Statistical Consulting Award and Recognition. Deserving students win OSCARs based on both technical excellence in their consulting activities and also the artistic style in the way they communicate their work. Additional attributes considered in the evaluation process include the consultant's focus on their client's problem, the consultant's dedication to delivering timely results, and the consultant's enthusiasm and energy for challenging themselves to learn and apply statistical modeling methods they may not already know.

OSCARs are presented annually by the Department of Statistics. All UCR students, both undergraduate and graduate, are eligible to receive an OSCAR based on their statistical consulting activities. Students can participate in statistical consulting activities in a number of ways, including employment at the UCR Statistical Consulting Collaboratory, enrollment in the graduate level Statistical Consulting Course (STAT 293), or participation in special consulting projects throughout the academic year.

The number of OSCAR awards will vary from year to year, and students are eligible to win multiple times. The award consists of a detailed citation of all the attributes that make the student deserving, and an accompanying cash prize.
